Abraham Lincoln, who became the 16th president of the U.S.A., was an extraordinary man. His remarkable achievement was his astute leadership in the American Civil War. He succeeded in preserving the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.
Many famous stories about Abraham Lincoln highlight his perseverance, wisdom, and humility, making him a symbol of integrity and resilience. Lincoln is admired by Americans because he represents the “rags-to-riches” story that we want to believe is possible for all Americans.
A man for all times, Lincoln's strong principles, timeless rhetoric, and resolute leadership have contributed to his status as a globally recognized figure. The most lasting accomplishments attributed to Lincoln are the preservation of the Union, the vindication of democracy, and the death of slavery.
Early Life of President Lincoln
Beginning in his mid thirties Lincoln worked hard to improve himself , developing self understanding, discipline and strategies for helping others in problems that would become the foundation of his character. As noted , work was a first refuge; he advised a friend,” I think if I were you , in case my mind were not exactly right , I would avoid being idle.”
When he was off duty , two things gave him most relief. He told stories and jokes , studiously gathering new material from talented peers and printed sources. But Mary Todd met Lincoln again on a friendly note and persuaded him for marriage.
At last on November 4,1842, when Lincoln was nearly thirty three, he was safely married. There are slight indications that, occasions of difficulty and pain to Lincoln with Mary Todd happened up to the end of his life.
He took his seat in the House of Representatives at Washington for two years in the spring of 1847. There was no movement to reelect him,so he desired the post of “ Commissioner of the General Land Office”, but his application was delayed.
Lincoln And A wrong decision of the Supreme Court
A tempting offer was made to him, that of Governorship of Oregon Territory, but Mrs Lincoln didn't let him cut himself completely from politics. As for himself ,disappointed with the progress of his career and possibilities of good service with politics ,he left political life in 1849.
In 1850’s America, an old conflict over slavery began. That year senator A. Douglas engineered the repeal of Missouri compromise, which had prohibited slavery, and laid down a policy of “popular sovereignty,” which delegated slavery policy to local Voters.
Lincoln felt the new policy will spread slavery through the nation. He thought to fight against the conflict. Little later Lincoln returned to political Strife and was one of the founders of the Republican party in 1854 which was formed on the basis widespread public opinion on opposition to slavery.
Douglas seemed packed with charisma. He cared nothing whether Negroes were slaves or not, and doubtless despised Northern and Southern sentiment on that subject equally. Lincoln was a truly odd physical. Douglas hit all the right notes and spark thunderous applause.
But Lincoln’s eloquence produced a strong belief in listeners. Opposing the extension of slavery on moral grounds but conceding its existence as a practical necessity, Lincoln found himself in a difficult spot.
Republicans had a staggering blow fell upon them as the supreme court pronounced that the exclusion of slavery from any portion of Territories is unconstitutional. For the time, however, the Republicans were deeply depressed.
But in 1860, prairie lawyer and former one-term congressman Abraham Lincoln stunned the country by prevailing over three prominent rivals. Lincoln is remembered as a martyr and a national hero for his wartime leadership and for his efforts to preserve the Union and abolish slavery.
